Dr Lau Peng Choong is a Consultant Upper GI, Bariatric and General Surgeon at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur and an Honorary Visiting Consultant at University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). Formerly Associate Professor and Head of the Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery Unit at the University of Malaya, he specialises in upper gastrointestinal and minimally invasive surgery.
He completed fellowships in advanced gastric cancer surgery in Seoul and in upper GI and bariatric surgery in the UK, supported by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. His clinical interests include gastric and oesophageal cancers, gastro-oesophageal reflux, achalasia, hernias, gallstone disease, and bariatric surgery.
A pioneer in minimally invasive techniques, Dr Lau helped introduce POEM (Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy) for achalasia in Malaysia and was among the early adopters of fluorescent imaging in laparoscopic surgery. He has trained numerous surgeons and currently serves on Malaysia’s National Upper GI Surgery Subspecialty Training Committee and as an Evaluator for the National Specialist Register.
Dr Lau is a recognised expert in upper GI surgery and complex abdominal wall hernias, frequently invited to speak at local and international surgical conferences.
